Kranjska Gora – a destination that never disappoints
Kranjska Gora is only about 2.5 hours away from Zagreb and is an ideal destination in any season.
In winter it is a destination for many skiers, but it is certainly not the only asset of this beautiful place, surrounded by the highest peaks of the Julian Alps. We can no longer list how many times we stopped by the beautiful lake Jasna, which always delights us with its beauty, view and reflection of Prisojnik and Razor, the "guardian" of Kranjska Gora. The road across Vršič is a special experience, except for those sensitive to winding roads, the river Pišnica, the waterfall Peričank, Tamar, Planica, Zelenci, Srednji Vrh, beauties are at your fingertips or feet.
A lot of time has passed from a shepherd village named Borovška you to a tourist bait. Two infrastructure events were crucial for this; the first is the construction of a road across Vršič, which is still an important factor in every sense, and the second is the railway, which no longer operates in the area today. After that, the construction of the cable car began. With its 800 m above sea level, in some slightly different winters than these last ones, Kranjska Gora was ideal for skiers from all over the ex Yu area. Wise Slovenians seem to have sensed climate change, and have not left the matter to chance and focused only on skiing, so Kranjska Gora is the origin of numerous hiking and cycling trails. One of the most beautiful and longest bike trails we have seen is right here - a circular bike trail that leads from Kranjska Gora through Bled, Bohinj, Tolmin, Kobarid, Bovac and Vršič back to Kranjska Gora. The entire circle is 232 km long.
If the meteorological conditions are not favorable at the time of stay in Kranjska Gora, there are four museums on offer, the most interesting of which is the Slovenian Mountain Museum in Mojstrana, which will be discussed in a separate passage. In addition to him, there are also Nordic center Planica, Pocarjeva domćija and Liznjekova hiša. In addition to the museum, one should definitely look for refreshment in one of the countless local "guests". What we have tried, and what we can definitely recommend, is Gostilna Jožica in Gozd Martuljko, Lačni Kekec in Kranjska Gora, Miho's home on the threshing road, Šurc in Rateč.
It is difficult to shorten everything and make some concise description of Kranjska Gora, but below are our favorite destinations in Kranjska Gora and its surroundings.
Lake Jasna
We don't count visits to this beauty anymore, we often find ourselves on the road and we are always ready to set aside time for her. The attendant and Razor gordo are reflected in the clarity and blueness of this beautiful lake, Uncle Vitranc always keeps an eye on visitors and is ready to pose for perhaps the most common postcard of Kranjska Gora.
Vršič and its road
Almost as many times as we stopped at Jasna, we took 50 serpentines. Vršič with its 1611m, the highest road pass in the eastern Julian Alps. It is a pass that connects Kranjska Gora with Bovac and the Soča valley, and is located just below the peak of the same name, which is located at 1737 m. Vršič is a meeting place for numerous hikers and the origin of numerous trails, towards Mali and Velika Mojstrovka, Prisojnik, Slemenova špica... It also offers the possibility of sleeping in one of the very well-kept homes - Tičarev and Poštarski dom, and Erjavec's carriage.
The views from Vršič also leave you breathless, and one of them is the next point, the Ajdovska deklica.
Ajdovska Declica
The Ajdov blanket was of good heart. She lived under the harrowing walls of Prisanko (or Prisojnik) and led the passengers through the snowfalls across Vršič to Trenta. When the passengers returned, they left her food under the Prisoner, so that she was never thirsty or hungry.
But she also had another service. She visited young mothers and newborns and prophesied their fate.
One night she visited a villager in Trenti who had just given birth to a son. As the mother slept, the blanket quietly approached the child and foretold to him that he would become a hunter and that he would shoot the gold horn and gain a fabulous fortune with his horns. When her sisters heard of this prophecy, they cursed her because she prophesied death to the goldsmith. That's how she got stoned when she came back under the Officer.
Slovenian Mountain Museum in Mojstrana
The Slovenian Mountaineering Museum presents the preserved Slovenian mountaineering heritage, the natural science contents of the Slovenian mountains, flora and fauna, as well as the display of equipment once and today, the functioning of rescue services, the experience of the buffalo and the like. The Slovenians say it is the first playable museum in the world. The content is very interesting; Escape room and bivouac and boards with quiz content are certainly a reason to come and see this museum. There is also a VR challenge of climbing to Triglav.
The Pericles Waterfall
Although it is written in the singular, it is actually made up of two waterfalls: lower and upper, of which the lower is higher, i.e. 52 m high, while the upper is only 16 m high. What makes both waterfalls specific is that you can come behind them, and watch the waterfall from the "inside" side. It is truly an impressive force that breaks the water when the Pericles touches the stone.
