Catalonia is an autonomous community and historical region in northeastern Spain. It consists of four regions; Barcelona, Girona, Lerida and Tarragona. Catalonia is a predominantly hilly region with the higher Pyrenees in the north, and the lower Catalan mountains near the Mediterranean Sea. Tourism is a strong branch, a quarter of visitors to Spainfor their visit chose Catalonia. The strongest asset is certainly Barcelona, the Catalan capital and port, as well as nearby resorts on Costa Brava and Costa Duradi.

Barcelona is also the second largest city in Spain, but also the strongest industrial and commercial center. It is also an important cultural centre and one of the leading tourist destinations with a rich cultural heritage. With 5 million tourists a year, it is the most visited European city after Paris, Rome and London. One of the reasons why so many people visit Barcelona is surely the legacy of the genius architect Antonio Gaudi. Its buildings-museums, parks, basilica Sagrada familia, are the most visited sites in Barcelona. In addition, there are many other attractions and curiosities, and fans of gossip and drinks will definitely come to their own; In fact, according to a local, the most important thing in Barcelona is food. Therefore, the city is full of restaurants, bistros and tapas-bars that mostly have very high ratings in all reviews.

Near Barcelona there is another attraction, Mount Montserrat where there is also a Benedictine abbey, the monastery of Santa Maria de Montserrat, the main Catalan sanctuary.

For us hikers, more important than the monastery are hiking trails, which are not lacking on Mount Montserrat. In addition, we will visit the highly visited (by hikers) Montseny Nature Park, which is also located near Barcelona.

Basically, this trip is a combination of hiking and a classic tourist visit to a very, very interesting destination.

FIRST DAY

We depart from Zagreb Airport according to the flight schedule. At 10:00 we arrive in Barcelona, take a taxi and go to our hotel (15 minutes drive). After placing in the apartments, we first go shopping for breakfast. Right next to the hotel there is a large Mercadona store, where we can buy everything we need for breakfast, etc. for the next few days. The store works every day of our stay, so you don't have to buy everything the same day. When we're done, we head to the nearby metro station, buy a "show" in four days, and head towards the center. We arrive at Espany Plaza in about 20 minutes, and from there we head to Montjuic, the green oasis of Barcelona. There are Montjuic Castle, Espanyol Pub, Olympic Stadium, several museums, a botanical garden and many other gardens, as well as a multitude of hiking trails. We'll probably spend at least three hours there, and then descend back to Plaza Espanya, and then from there to Case Battlo. This is the first of four attractions we will visit, which Barcelona has been given by the ingenious architect Antonio Gaudi. The tour of the building takes about an hour and a half. After that, we go to another Barcelona attraction, La Boqueria Market, which we need a 20-minute walk to. Someone might think, a market like a market, but this is really something special. It can also be eaten at the market itself, but we will still go to some of the tapas bars or restaurants that are not lacking here in Gothic Quarter.

The Second Day

Getting up and having breakfast. Today we go to the mountains, more precisely to the Montserrat mountains, where there is also the famous monastery of the same name. We need less than an hour's drive to Montserrat. We head along the circular path towards the highest peak Sant Jeroni (1237m). All the way, and especially on the way back from the top, we are surrounded by extremely interesting rock formations. The trail is not too difficult, about 12 km and 650m altitude difference, the terrain is not too demanding. The first part of the trail abounds with stairs (uphill), and further these are mostly wide forest paths. Upon descent, we can sit down for a drink, if someone wants to see the monastery, buy some souvenirs, etc. After returning to the hotel, taking a shower and a little rest, we go by metro to the center, first for dinner, and later we plan to visit the Casa Milla or La Pedrera building, another Gaudi attraction.  The most striking part of the building is certainly the roof with chimney-guards, which especially comes to the fore at night, under the lights of the spotlight and the play of light. The guided tour in English lasts approximately 1.5 hours. In the end, a glass or two of drinks is offered, as part of the tour.

The Third Day

Getting up and having breakfast. Hiking awaits us again today. We drive to Montseny National Park, which takes less than an hour and a half to get there. And here we go on a circular path 10 km long, overcoming about 500 m of altitude difference. Along the way there are several viewpoints, passes and the highest peak Turo de l'Home (1705m). After the descent, we can have a drink in one of the restaurants in the parking lot, and head back to the hotel. After resting and showering, we head on the standard metro route to the city center. First to dinner, then to Espany Plaza to Montjuic Fountain. Three nights a week (Thursday, Friday and Saturday), there is a light-water show, something that should not be missed. After the show, we return to the hotel.

FOURTH DAY

Getting up and having breakfast. We returned the car to the rent-a-car, so this day we stay in Barcelona, we do not go hiking anymore. With the combination of metro and bus we will come to Turo de la Rovira, an excellent viewpoint on the whole city. After the lookout, we go to one of the great attractions of Barcelona, Park Guell. Parc Guell is another "miracle" of Antonio Gaudi. We'll be in the park for 1-1.5 hours. From there we will take a walk to the most important, we can also say the life work of Gaudi, the basilica of Sagrada Familia. Although we didn't go hiking today, we don't miss walking. We will surely be hungry already, so we enter the subway and in an instant we are again in the, now known to us, Gothic Quarter. Today we are here at a “good” time, when there is not yet a crowd for dinner, so there should be more room in the restaurant. At the end of the day, we go to a flamenco show in one of the ‘Tablaoa’ (the tree is the name for the place where the flamenco show is performed). Later, we can possibly take a little more walk along the most famous street in Barcelona, Rambla, and then return to the hotel.

The Fifth Day

Getting up and having breakfast. At 8:30 we take a taxi to the airport. At 10:45 we depart for Zagreb, where we arrive at 13:00.
