Dolomites - Tre Čime (5 days) 05.-09.08.2026. - REFERENCE
The Dolomites or Dolomite Alps are a mountain group in the eastern Alps in Italy. They are mainly located in the province of Belluno (Veneto) and, to a lesser extent, in the provinces of South Tyrol and Trentino (all in northeastern Italy).
By convention, it stretches from the Adige river in the west to Piava in the east, and between the Puster valley in the north and the Sugana valley in the south. One national park (Parco Nazionale Dolomiti Bellunesi) and several regional parks are located in the Dolomites.
In August 2009, the Dolomites were declared a natural World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The Dolomites have 21 peaks higher than 3,000 m above sea level and cover an area of about 141,903 hectares. There are some of the most beautiful Alpine landscapes with vertical rocks, steep cliffs and a large density of narrow, deep and long valleys. There are varied landscapes of great geological significance, such as natural columns and walls, karst formations (the largest number of different limestone formations in a limited area in the world) is, peaks and glaciers. They testify to the rich geomorphological past of rocks formed by erosion, earthquakes and glaciation.
Some standalone rocks are more than 1,500 m from their bottom, and are among the highest limestone cliffs in the world. This is why landslides, floods and avalanches are common in this area.
Dolomites are perhaps the most visited mountain massif in the world, which is the cause of their only flaw - too crowded.

itinerary
FIRST DAY
We leave from Zagreb at 7:00. With two stops, we should reach Lago di Braies/Pragser Wildsee, perhaps the most famous lake (by Lake Sorapis) in the Dolomites. Instagram users must have come across photos of the lake. In addition to the inevitable photos from the lake, we will make a circle around it, and turn (30 minutes) to the mountain lodge of Malga Forest/Grunwald Alm. In southern Tyrol, all the names are bilingual (Italian and German), and in some places trilingual (local Laden language). After visiting the lake, we head towards our accommodation, which we need a little less than half an hour's drive. We place ourselves in rooms, and still as suited to whom (dinner, walk, socialize, sleep...).
The Second Day
Getting up and having breakfast. At 8:30 we are going to the most likely and biggest attraction in this part of Dolomite, Tre Čime di Lavaredo. A short ride (30 min) separates us from the parking lot next to Rifugio Auronzo from where the circular trail around Tre Čima (Three Peaks) starts. The trail is about 10 km long, overcoming a little more than 400m of altitude difference, and for its tour it is necessary, with frequent stops, about 4 hours walk. But we will extend the trail a bit, so we will turn towards one of the best gazebos in the Dolomites, the gazebo to the Cadini di Misurina mountain range. In the peak season there are queues to get to the lookout itself, but not even 50 or 100m earlier is nothing worse. From the lookout point we return to the trail towards Rifugio Locatelli, or to the circular trail around Tre which. At rifugia we will take a longer break, and along the way we have a few more viewpoints/photo points. Somewhere halfway there is Rifugio Locatelli, where we will make a longer break. On the way back, we have another break at Lange alma (the most beautiful rifugio on the trail). From Lange Alm, we have less than an hour to the parking lot. We return to the hotel as it suits everyone (dinner, walk, socialize, sleep...).
The Third Day
Getting up and having breakfast. We head at 8:30 am towards Tre Croci (30 minutes drive) from where the trail starts towards Lake Sorapis, another great attraction. The trail to the lake is secured in places by steel cables, while metal stairs/ladders are installed in places. Near the lake there is Rifugio Vandelli where we will take a break before leaving the lake. The trail is largely visited by hikers who are often not hikers, and occasionally crowds are created on the trail, especially in slightly more demanding places, but with a little patience, there is no problem. Returning to the Tre Croci pass (the same way) follows a short drive to the hotel, and further as in previous days, as it suits whom.
FOURTH DAY
Getting up and having breakfast. At 8:30 we head towards passo Giau, one of the best dolomite passes, as far as the gaze is concerned. We arrive at the passo Giau in about an hour. The trail across the Giau saddle leads us to the top of Moldevan (2455m), and further on to the Ambrizzola saddle on Mount Croda da Lago. It is one of the most special mountains, with characteristic, distant recognizable, serrated peaks. The circular trail around Croda da Lago is one of the most popular trails, although one part is quite demanding due to the steep cuttlefish (a descent from the Formin saddle). We don't go to that part, because we don't do the "classic" circle. From the Ambrizzola saddle, we descend towards Lake Federa, where rifugio Croda da Lago is located. We're taking a long break here. A little more than an hour of descent through the forest separates us from the parking lot. In the parking lot, a van will wait for us and take us back to passo Giau. We're going back to the hotel as before.
The Fifth Day
Getting up and having breakfast. Today is the day of return, we take all things, check out from the hotel and at 8:00 we head to Lake Misurina from which we are 20 minutes drive away. We take the cable car to 2100m, and from there we climb for about 50m to the lookout below the peak of Col di Varda. From the lookout point we descend back onto the trail and head towards rifugio Citta di Carpi, which we reach in just over an hour. Rifugio is located on the pass Maraia (2101m) which is another excellent viewpoint on the mountain chain Cadini di Misurina, only this time on the other side. After resting and taking photos, we return partly the same way, and then on another path we descend towards the lake and the parking lot. We can have lunch at one of the lake restaurants, and after lunch we head back. Return to Zagreb is scheduled in the evening.
