Canary Islands or Canaries (Islas Canarias or Canarias ) are archipelagos of seven islands of volcanic origin in the Atlantic Ocean, northwest of the coast of Africa. These are Tenerife, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro. The nearest island is 108km from the coast of Morocco. Although geographically in Africa, the islands belong to Spain, within which they form an autonomous community. The name is of Latin origin Insularia Canaria This means the "Island of Dogs", initially used only for the island of Gran Canaria. Guanche, the natives of the archipelago were completely exterminated by the Spanish invaders.

Thanks to its geographical location, the Canaries are an archipelago of eternal spring, temperatures generally range from 18 to 28 degrees Celsius. This, of course, does not apply to the mountainous parts of the archipelago where temperatures go even below zero, but this is characteristic only for Tenerife and its highest peak Pico del Teide, which with its 3715m (somewhere referred to as 3718m) is also Spain's highest peak, the highest island peak in the Atlantic, and the third largest volcanic system in the world (the first two are located in Hawaii).

Of the 13 Spanish national parks, 4 are located in the Canary Islands. These are:

- NP de la Caldera de Taburiente on La Palma Island

- NP Garajonay on the island of La Gomera

- NP del Teide on Tenerife

- NP Timanfaya on the island of Lanzarote

Tenerife is the largest and most densely populated island in the archipelago. It is mostly mountainous and abundant with well-kept hiking trails, which are mostly located in the National Park Teide. Teide National Park, the island's largest attraction, is the most visited European National Park with over 5 million visitors per year, making it the top 10 in the world. At the foot of the mountain, at the height of 2000-2200m there is a huge crater 15-17km wide through which leads the main road. Along the road there are many viewpoints, so driving through the crater itself (with a lot of stops) is already an experience in itself. The island's second biggest attraction is the Loro Parque Zoo. Attractiveness is mostly due to performances that take place several times a day. The main participants of these shows are parrots, sea lions, dolphins and Orka whales.

FIRST DAY:

Departure from Zagreb airport to the flight schedule. With one transfer, we arrive at Tenerife around 6 p.m. After raising the vehicle in the rent-a-car, we go to the shopping center for breakfast, etc. Within the shopping center there are many restaurants, so we can have dinner. We need another 10 minutes drive to get to the accommodation.

Day 2:

Rising and breakfast. For the first walking day we chose a trail near Pico del Teide itself. A circular trail, 13km without big climbs, through the desolation, surrounded by a hardened lion and somewhat low vegetation. El Teide is almost all the way in the field of vision, and there are great chances of seeing a common phenomenon there, a sea of clouds. It is a cluster of thick white clouds at a height of 1500-1800m, which often accumulate in some places along the coast of the island. We're at 2100-2200m, so we're above the clouds.

There is literally nothing along the way, so water and possibly food, etc. should be carried with you. When we get back to the parking lot, then we'll be easy. There are cafes and restaurants nearby, so we'll rinse the dust with some beer or sangria. Return to accommodation, a little rest, showering and going to dinner. After dinner, how anyone wants, hanging out or going to sleep.

Day 3:

Rising and breakfast. Today we're going on a different path, even though her name doesn't say it. The trail is called ‘Moonscape’, or perhaps it is better to say that the trail leads to ‘Moonscape’. Just a destination and is not something particularly attractive, a few unusual rocky formations. But the road to there is wonderful. One blog says that this path should not be taken because of the destination, but because of the way to it. That's exactly how it is. Our slogan “travel for the journey and not for the purpose” is really valid here. The landscaped trail (without major ascents) mostly leads through the not too thick coniferous forest, extremely beautiful light green color that in cooperation with the blue sky makes you not want to go from there.

A shorter variant of the trail is approximately 8km long. The beginning of the trail is reached by a gravel road, which in some moments can be closed by a ramp. In this case, the beginning of the trail moves to Vilaflor de Chasna, and the total length increases to 13km. Just like the day before, there's nothing here along the way, everything has to be carried with it.

After refreshment in one of the cafes/restaurants, we do not immediately go to the accommodation, but to the beach. Almost by the way are two beaches, Playa de las Americas and Playa de Los Cristianos. The beaches are located in strong tourist centers, so we can have dinner there. We need another 15-minute drive to get to the accommodation.

FOUR DAY:

Rising and breakfast. Today is Teide Day. Teide is an active stratovolcano whose last eruption was in 1909. Local authorities have limited Pico del Teide to 200 people per day, requiring permission. It is possible to reach the top on foot, all the way from the parking lot, or by cable car to 3540m, and further on on foot. In both cases, a permit is required. We're going on a cable car. The licence is valid for 2 hours and only valid for that day. It is advisable to buy a cable car ticket in advance. Also, it is necessary to align the time of the cableway and the permit (tickets for both are purchased for the correct period of time). In case of bad weather the cable car does not work, and therefore nothing from the climb to the top. While the cable car ticket can be transferred to another day (it is also possible to get a refund), the money for the permit is refunded, but the term has failed, since there are no free appointments for another day, especially for the group. You should keep figs to make that day a nice time. Along with Teide, we will visit another shorter trail near the road (3.6km), stop at several viewpoints, and if there is time, we can go to the beach again. Or in accommodation, and then dinner.

PETI DAY:

Rising and breakfast. Today there is no hiking, little rest. We're going to Loro Parque where we'll stay for a few hours. The ZOO website has a play schedule, so anyone can arrange a stay as it suits them. Of course, there are drinks and drinks there, so it should not be taken into account. After the zoo, another interesting thing awaits us, Camello center. Visiting the Camello center takes a little over half an hour, and the main part is riding on camels. After that, we go back to the accommodation, and then to dinner.

Six Days:

Rising and breakfast. We're going to the woods today. This time it's not that bright green coniferous forest, but a different one. Anaga Nature Park has a special micro climate, very often it is in the fog and/or cloud, so everything is full of moisture; the leaves are wet, the soil is moist, in places even a little muddy. Two shorter trails await us with almost the same origin, so we'll merge them into one. Just under 7km, and 250m ascent. Completely different from previous days. After that, we go to Las Teresitas, perhaps the most famous beach on the island. The beach is located near the capital Santa Cruz de Tenerife, so we will take a little walk around the city and go there for dinner.

SEDMI DAY:

Rising and breakfast. To end another volcano. Chinyero. The circular trail without larger and longer climbs is 13km long. A good part passes through such a beautiful light green forest, and partly across the field of hardened lava. Impressive combination of greenery and blackness, like most islands. It seems like a great ending to our trip to Tenerife. Return to accommodation, dinner and preparation for tomorrow's departure.

OSMI DAY:

Rising and breakfast. The plane leaves at 11 a.m., which means it should be at 9-9:15 a.m. at the airport. We have a 20-minute drive to it, return the vehicle(s) and ... return. With one transfer at 23:00 we should arrive in Zagreb.
