Portugal - Fishermen's trail 21.-28.10.2026.
Fishermen's trail (Trilho dos Pescadores) is a 226km long hiking trail in the southern part of Portugal. It passes through two provinces, Alentejo and Algarve, and is part of a network of hiking trails called Rota Vicentina. According to the prestigious Condé Nast Traveler magazine, it is one of the world's most beautiful coastal trails, since it passes along the sea, i.e. the Atlantic Ocean, almost all its length. Most of the trail is located on steep cliffs that rise vertically from the ocean. The terrain is mostly sandy, and often it is deep sand that is not very easy to walk on (similar to deep snow). It is interesting how from this sand grows various Mediterranean plants and flowers. Along the way, there are many smaller settlements that used to be fishing villages, and today are mostly urban tourist places, so that accommodation of all kinds, restaurants and cafes is not lacking. The trail is extremely well visited in spring and autumn, although it is not noticed on the trail itself.
In six days, we will pass a little more than a third of the track, approximately 85km. At the same time, as far as possible, we threw out walking on asphalt, as well as some less interesting sections. All the time we are located in one place (apartments), and we will have at our disposal both a driver and a van/minibus that will transport us every day to the track, from the track, to dinner, etc.

FIRST DAY
We depart from Zagreb Airport according to the flight schedule. With one transfer, in the afternoon we arrive in Portugal (Lisbon or Faro) where we will wait for transportation and take us to our accommodation in Luz. After placing in the apartments, we can go (who wants) somewhere for dinner.
The Second Day
Getting up and having breakfast. After breakfast we head to Vila Nova de Milfontes where our Portuguese adventure begins. We will not leave the place itself to avoid walking on the asphalt, but we will come closer to the track by vehicle. Today's day ends in Almograve, where we will be greeted by a van. From there we drive to Zumbajeira de Mar where we will have dinner. After dinner, drive to the apartment. The first few days we are in the northern part of the trail (accommodation is in the southern part), so those days the ride will be a little longer (just over an hour in one direction).
12km, 4 hours walk
The Third Day
Getting up and having breakfast. We drive to Almograve, where we ended up walking yesterday. A little more walking is waiting for us today. About halfway there is the village of Cavaleiro where we will take a longer break. The day ends in Zumbajeira de Mar where we stay for dinner. After dinner, drive to the apartment.
22km, 7 hours walk
FOURTH DAY
Getting up and having breakfast. Today we go back to where we left off yesterday. We drive to Zumbajeire de Mar from where we head to Odeciexe. Along the way, we have two breaks, the first in the beach bar on Carvahal beach, and the second in Azenha do Mar (also near the beach). We will not walk all the way to Odeciexe, but the van will take us the last 4 km (asphalt). We'll have dinner in Odeciex, and after dinner we'll drive back to the apartments.
16km, 5 hours walk
The Fifth Day
Getting up and having breakfast. Today we move to the southern part of the trail, closer to the accommodation. We drive to Vila to Bispo, or 2 km out of town, to avoid walking on asphalt. Today's goal is Cabo de Sao Vicente, the southwesternmost point of the European continent. There will be a van waiting for us and take us to a late lunch/early dinner in Sagres, and later to the apartment.
12km, 4 hours walk
The Sixth Day
Getting up and having breakfast. A short drive separates us from Salem, where we start today. On the way we have two breaks, one on the beach and the other in Burgau (again on the beach). The day ends in Luz, the place where we are located. After the holiday, we go to dinner in one of the nearby restaurants.
12km, 4.5 hours walk
The Seventh Day
Getting up and having breakfast. We head from the apartment towards Lagos, the town where the Fisherman's Trail ends. Just before Lagos, there is Ponta da Piedade, perhaps the most interesting part of the whole trail and one of the major Portuguese attractions in general. These are unique formations of rocks intersected by numerous caves, which can be reached by boats, and which can be reached by countless stairs. To our final point, a beach restaurant before entering Lagos, we are just under an hour's walk away. There'll be a van waiting for us and we'll be back in the apartments. After the holiday we go to dinner in Luz.
10km, 4 hours walk
OTHER DAY
Getting up and having breakfast. The van takes us to the airport (Lisbon or Faro), and according to the flight schedule we depart for Zagreb.
