The Dolomites or Dolomite Alps are a mountain group in the eastern Alps in Italy. They are mainly located in the province of Belluno (Veneto) and, to a lesser extent, in the provinces of South Tyrol and Trentino (all in northeastern Italy).

By convention, it stretches from the Adige river in the west to Piava in the east, and between the Puster valley in the north and the Sugana valley in the south. One national park (Parco Nazionale Dolomiti Bellunesi) and several regional parks are located in the Dolomites.

In August 2009, the Dolomites were declared a natural World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The Dolomites have 21 peaks higher than 3,000 m above sea level and cover an area of about 141,903 hectares. There are some of the most beautiful Alpine landscapes with vertical rocks, steep cliffs and a large density of narrow, deep and long valleys. There are varied landscapes of great geological significance, such as natural columns and walls, karst formations (the largest number of different limestone formations in a limited area in the world) is, peaks and glaciers. They testify to the rich geomorphological past of rocks formed by erosion, earthquakes and glaciation.

Some standalone rocks are more than 1,500 m from their bottom, and are among the highest limestone cliffs in the world. This is why landslides, floods and avalanches are common in this area.

Dolomites are perhaps the most visited mountain massif in the world, which is the cause of their only flaw - too crowded.

itinerary

FIRST DAY

We leave from Zagreb at 7:00. With two stops, around 2 p.m. we arrive at the Falzarego Pass near Cortina d'Ampezzo. We take the cable car to Rifugio Lagazuoi (2752m), the tallest and largest rifugia in Cortina d'Ampezzo.  After a lot, a lot of photography and enjoying the views, we go down the path on the Falzarego pass. A lot of amazing views await us along the way (Marmolada, Tofana di Rozes, Croda da Lago...), so it is to be expected that we will spend at least two hours (1.5 would be enough without stopping). After we leave, we go to our hotel, which takes us half an hour's drive. We place ourselves in rooms, and still as suited to whom (dinner, walk, socialize, sleep...).

The Second Day

Getting up and having breakfast. At 8:00 we head towards one of the biggest attractions in the vicinity of Cortina, Cinque Torri (Five Towers). The trail first leads us to Rifugio Cinque Torri where we will make the first break. Our next stop is Rifugio Scoiattoli. Here we take a break for rest and photography. This is followed by Rifugio Averau (2413m), which offers an excellent view of Cinque Torri, Civetta, Marmolada... Here we take a short break and continue towards Rifugio Nuvolau (2575m) which is located at the top of the same name. If the view from Rifugio Averau is excellent, this one is even better, because it is at the very top and is unobstructed in all directions. Here, of course, we take a break again, and after it we go down to Rifugio Scoiattoli (2250m) located near Cinque Torri. Between the towers there is an open-air museum with the remains of bunkers, tunnels, etc. from the 1st World War. The trail around and through the towers is a little less than 2 km long and with stops it passes in 1 hour. We will take another break in Rifugio Scoiattoli, and after that, a short but relatively steep path descends to the parking lot. Return to the hotel as in previous days, as it suits you.

The Third Day

Getting up and having breakfast. At 8:30 we head towards passo Giau, one of the best dolomite passes, as far as the gaze is concerned. We'll be at the passo Giau in 20 minutes. The trail across the Giau saddle leads us to the top of Moldevan (2455m), and further on to the Ambrizzola saddle on Mount Croda da Lago. It is one of the most special mountains, with characteristic, distant recognizable, serrated peaks. The circular trail around Croda da Lago is one of the most popular trails, although one part is quite demanding due to the steep cuttlefish (a descent from the Formin saddle). We don't go to that part, because we don't do the "classic" circle. From the Ambrizzola saddle, we descend towards Lake Federa, where rifugio Croda da Lago is located. We're taking a long break here. A little more than an hour of descent through the forest separates us from the parking lot. In the parking lot, a van will wait for us and take us back to passo Giau. We're going back to the hotel as before.

FOURTH DAY

Getting up and having breakfast. Today is the day of return, we take all things, check out from the hotel and at 8:30 we head towards the Pordoi pass, which we need about 45 minutes drive. The Viel dal Pan trail, or bread trail, is named after the merchants from Bellun used to carry flour and other products to the Ladin valleys. Today it is a panoramic trail with views of Marmolada, Piz Boe, Sassolungo... Along the way we have two rifugia, so there are places for rest and refreshment. If everything goes according to plan, by 2 p.m. we will be back in the parking lot and soon we will head to Zagreb, which we will reach in the evening with two stops.
